Well, this one was unexpected! Just a few moments ago, Nintendo shadow dropped a Star Fox Direct and revealed Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 — a reimagining of Star Fox 64 featuring a massive visual upgrade, along with brand-new modes and features. Best of all, it launches next month on June 25th. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2?

Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 is a remake or reimagining of Star Fox 64 that follows all of the major story beats from the original game. Not only has it received a massive visual overhaul, but the character designs have also been updated to look far more realistic compared to the more animated style we’ve seen in the past.

Honestly, it gives me major puppet Star Fox vibes from when the original SNES game launched. I’m sure this decision is going to be divisive among fans, but it’s already starting to grow on me!

What’s new in Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2?

Beyond the visual upgrades, Star Fox features new cutscenes, tons of new conversations between the Star Fox crew, mouse support for aiming, and an all-new multiplayer squad shooter that lets you complete missions and take down enemies together.

A new mode called Character Avatars is also being introduced, allowing you to puppeteer a member of the Star Fox crew using your face while in Game Chat. It’s actually pretty impressive, as it tracks head, mouth, and eye movement!

Next up, according to the official Japanese website, amiibo support will also be available in Star Fox. Officially, amiibo will unlock special emblems and backgrounds. There’s currently no word on whether any new amiibo will be introduced, but stay tuned!

Finally, the Nintendo 64 controller is also compatible, giving you even more of a retro feel if that’s your thing.

Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 officially launches both digitally and physically on June 25th! Stay tuned for pre-order links!
