Throughout the countless interviews with the cast and crew of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, fans have recently learned that there are actually voice samples of Pikachu swearing in existence. From the initial tests using lines from Danny DeVito and Ryan Reynolds (from Deadpool), the internet is rejoicing over the fact that the memes surrounding the game did come true in a professional setting.
It hasn’t stopped there either, as Reynolds has stated he was able to ad-lib and run with his lines. He’s confirmed that there’s R-rated dialogue on the cutting room floor, but no official word has come out as to whether or not any animators actually processed the mocap data and tweaked it.
Taking it one step further, Megan Peters from Comicbook.com asked Reynolds directly about how he would handle a R-rated Pokémon: Detective Pikachu adventure. For those familiar with the genre, easily a dozen gritty, film noir stories jump to the forefront, yet Reynolds was able to pick out just two for this on-the-spot question, “I think if you could remake a Pikachu version of Mean Streets, that might be kind of fun. Or Goodfellas.”
While it won’t be likely that we’ll see an official Detective Pikachu work that crosses over into rated-R territory, fans have no problem creating it themselves with splicing audio and video together. Personally, now I’m envisioning a mashup of Detective Pikachu with Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang or The Nice Guys.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be out in theaters later this week, debuting worldwide on May 10th.
