While the smattering of character announcements grabs peoples’ attention, the Smash Ultimate Direct also had a bevy of info on smaller additions — case in point, the game’s new selection of items. There’s a whole slab of new info on items, Pokémon, and assist trophies, so let’s dive in and take a look:
Items
- Banana Gun – looks like a normal banana, but fires a single deadly shot. Snipe your enemies like you’re an eight year old messing with his/her lunch! It also leaves the peel afterward.
- Killing Edge (Fire Emblem) – a new sword weapon: when it glows red its strength increases greatly, just like when you get a critical hit in FE.
- Bomber (Kirby) – somewhat similar to Bob-ombs, if you lift it up it will explode in a large radius, damaging everyone but you.
- Death’s Scythe (Castlevania) – will instantly KO any character who’s racked up enough damage. Grant them final rest!
- Staff (Kid Icarus) – projectile weapon that increases in power the further away you are from your target.
- Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom (EarthBound) – a Fire Flower type weapon; when you hit an opponent a mushroom sprouts on their head and their controls are reversed. Faithful to the source material!
- Rage Blaster – does more damage the more damage the wielder has accumulated.
Pokémon
- Alolan Exeggutor – a tall lad whose massive frame forms a wall wherever he appears.
- Abra – teleports fighters around at random.
- Solgaleo – creates a burning aura that it then fires in a horizontal red-hot beam of sun fury.
- Lunala – flies into the background before releasing a cool blue moon ray that devastates vertically.
- Mimikyu – yoinks fighters to under its cloak, to where it commits unspeakable horrors until they die. No, really. That’s messed up.
- Pyukumuku – remains docile until attacked, at which point it slaps its aggressor hard across the face.
- Vulpix/Alolan Vulpix – fires a projectile that either creates a pillar of fire or freezes the foe; a la PK Fire and PK Freeze.
- Marshadow – hides in an opponent’s shadow before stunning them and then revving up a mighty blow.
- Ditto – copies whichever fighter approaches it first. Acts as a weak-AI partner.
Assist Trophies
- Alucard (Castlevania) – evoking his starring role in Symphony of the Night, Dracula’s son comes outfitted with dodge mechanics, sword strikes, and the ability to turn into a bat.
- Zero (Mega Man) – mobile AT who utilizes a variety of his classic sword slashes.
- Knuckles (Sonic) – utilizes homing attack and series of punches; does not chuckle.
- Krystal (Star Fox) – uses her staff to strike and freeze enemies.
- Klaptrap (Donkey Kong) – snakes along the ground until it hits someone, clamping them in place before delivering knockback.
- Kapp’n (Animal Crossing) – picks up anybody he passes by and then drives them offstage for a KO.
- Chef Kawasaki (Kirby) – catches foes in his frying pan before serving them up in the style of Kirby’s ol’ Cook final smash from Brawl.
- Gray Fox (Metal Gear) – returning alongside Snake, this swordsman reflects projectiles as he attacks.
- Nikki (Swapnote) – Draws a variety of shapes onscreen that can impact the battlefield; here we see a bullet bill.
- Shovel Knight – the big name reveal of the bunch for sure, the master of Shovelry can pogo stick on fools’ heads and utilize his basic shovel swipe. He can even dig up a chicken from the ground!
- Moon (The Legend of Zelda) – This purveyor of doom approaches the battlefield at a steady clip before obliterating everything in an apocalyptic fire.
That’s every item showcased during the Direct, though we can expect a lot more to come in the future, as there’s still a good five months until release. Stay wired for more Smash Direct news as we continue rounding up items in our coverage.
