On this day 14 years ago, Nintendo released its fourth home console in North America. The lunch box shaped console still holds a place in many Nintendo fans hearts and has library of some of the most unforgettable games.
Many might not remember that the Nintendo GameCube had one of the strongest launch lineups in video game history. Classic games like Luigi’s Mansion, Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader are still some of the best, and most cherished, games it has to offer– and not many consoles can say the same.
Even with a strong launch lineup, the GameCube holds the record for being the lowest selling Nintendo home console. Although, it’s possible that the Wii U might take its place sometime in the near future, the GameCube still managed to stay afloat. Nintendo only sold around 21.74 million GameCubes worldwide and of those 21.74 million sold, 12.94 million were sold in the Americas.
Despite its poor sales numbers, the GameCube brought gamers a new take on typical Nintendo games and opened the door for some new franchises. Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Kirby Air Ride, Animal Crossing, Pokémon Colosseum, Paper Mario, Wind Waker, Mario Kart, and last but not least, Super Smash Bros. Melee are just some of the most memorable games, the GameCube has to offer.
The GameCube controller is a perfect example of the console’s lasting legacy. 14 years later, the unique controller is still being used by gamers to play Super Smash Bros. The developers masterfully mapped the controls out so well that using anything else, would be a sin.
So, with the utmost respect for such a special console, here’s to the Nintendo GameCube on its 14th birthday. Thanks for all the great memories, Nintendo!
