For the past few years Monolith Soft has been hitting it out of the park on Nintendo platforms, releasing critically acclaimed JRPGs in the Xenoblade series across three systems. Given the success of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 the studio shows no signs of slowing down, but where they head in the future might be quite the change of scenery.

In the booklet included with Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s OST there’s a discussion between the game’s developers. As translated by WandererLugalbanda over on Reddit, Monolith Soft President and Xenoblade Director Tetsuya Takahashi had this to say…

“Me personally, I want to do something you’d see on an American cable drama like ABC. Violet and erotic and heavy. Something that there’s no way we would be allowed to do it.”

After that, fellow Monolith Soft employee Kou Kojima chimes in to say Nintendo could allow it, if it’s rated the equivalent of M in Japan.

The booklet also gives us an update on the future of the Xenoblade series, as relayed by MonolithNews, confirming that not only does the company want to make a sequel to Xenoblade 2 but also a numbered sequel to the Wii U’s Xenoblade X, essentially meaning the two would continue in tandem.

We’re sure to learn more about Monolith Soft’s future in the months to come – we’ve yet to really hear more about the mysterious fantasy project they’ve been hiring for since August last year. We’ll be sure to keep you posted!
