Yesterday Nintendo released its first update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, bringing with it a few minor fixes and alterations to online modes. Most perplexing, however, was the patch note that just read “Inkling Girl’s animation has been adjusted.”
Eagle eyed players on NeoGaf, and our own commentor “squidward”, soon noticed a very specific change in one of the Inkling Girl’s victory animations when she scores a hit on an opponent. She used to grasp her bicep and flex for the camera, but after the update she only does the flex.
It was likely changed thanks to the similarity the pose has to the offensive gesture known as the “bras d’honneur“, which is primarily used in several European countries and Latin America to essentially communicate “Up Yours!”
Incidentally, this isn’t the first time Nintendo has caught an accidental use of the gesture. The original Japanese release of Super Mario RPG had Bowser strike the same pose after emerging victorious. This was changed in the North American version to a simple fist pump.
Only time will tell which beloved Nintendo character will accidentally flip off the player next.
