One of the more understated parts of the Switch reveal last month was the graphic released by Nintendo featuring the various companies that’d be supporting the device once it launches next year. Many major third party developers are present in the list, and over the past few weeks we’ve heard vague plans from these companies regarding the new system.
One of the companies we hadn’t heard from until now is EA. During the UBS Global Technology Conference, which is currently underway in San Francisco, the Chief Financial Officer of EA, Blake Jorgensen, finally elaborated on the company’s relationship with the new system. Check out his quote:
“In terms of Nintendo, in their announcement they announced that we’ll be supporting with a game or two on that new platform. We haven’t yet announced what game, but you should assume that it’s one of our bigger games we’ve been involved with.”
So we have confirmation of at least one major EA game heading to the Switch, but given the scope of the company’s output it’s hard to predict what it could be. Mass Effect Andromeda is seemingly already ruled out, but we could see a port of Battlefield or even Star Wars Battlefront. The heart-warming Unravel would also be a natural fit for a Nintendo system, although its hardly a “big” game.
There’s always the possibility he’s simply talking about one of the company’s many sports games too, which isn’t as exciting but they are important to getting a more mainstream crowd on board with a new device.
Jorgensen also discussed the Switch in general, with a somewhat refreshing realism:
“We’re excited for Nintendo, it’s an interesting device, but I can’t yet predict how broad it’s going to be, and will people be interested in a portable device alongside their regular portable device that they have.”
Considering EA was one of several companies that pledged support for the Wii U and unceremoniously dropped it soon after launch it’s nice to see they’re at least preparing consumers for that potential eventuality.
We may see what EA is making for the Switch at the special event on January 12th, so be sure to check back!
