It’s hard to imagine that the fallout between Konami and Hideo Kojima happened only 11 years ago, but the series has basically been dead ever since. Despite releasing Metal Gear Survive in 2018, Konami only more recently began developing new releases for Metal Gear Solid with the “Master Collection” series and a full-on remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater titled Metal Gear Solid Delta. Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka, famously the voice of Solid Snake, vowed to never work on another Metal Gear without Kojima, but some comments he made to Japanese publication Bunshun show that he hopes Konami will produce a new installment in the series for “fans all over the world.”
Reiterating his stance, Otsuka said, “when it comes to the Metal Gear series, it’s something Director Kojima created, and I take pride in having helped build it. That’s why I said ‘I don’t want to do any Metal Gear that doesn’t involve Director Kojima’. Now that I’ve said it, I can’t back down.” Chuckling, he says that he feels Konami should create another game, “for Metal Gear fans all over the world. There are fans all over the world eagerly waiting for it. So let’s make one more Metal Gear game for them. I figure, since he’s [Kojima] making his own thing with Death Stranding, why not?”
That’s not expressly Otsuka saying he’ll contribute to a new Metal Gear, but it can be construed that way. Earlier in the interview, Otsuka praised Kojima for continuing to work despite the business with Konami, showing admiration for Death Stranding and how Kojima was able to get funding from Sony for a completely original project. “He went through so many hardships after leaving the company and managed to pull off this massive project. When I think about that, it brings tears to my eyes,” Otsuka said.

Otsuka was involved with Death Stranding, where he provided the Japanese dub for Die-Hardman. Still, Kojima has been off doing his own thing while Otsuka continues to contribute to a ludicrous number of projects. There’s no reason he couldn’t return for a new Metal Gear (outside archival recordings used for Metal Gear Solid Delta), especially since he knows how much fans would love that.
