Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered released earlier this week and, overall, has been met with positive reception from fans. Staying true to the original while updating its performance, visuals, and some mechanics, developer Omega Force has resurrected one of the defining games in the series for a new generation. While this likely won’t be the last remaster we see from the series, producer Tomohiko Sho has stated he’d rather focus on newer games instead of revisiting the past due to his age.
In an interview with 4Gamer, Sho was asked about future plans for remastering older games in the series. As you’d expected, he said, “If this remaster of “Dynasty Warriors 3” is successful, I think the chances of remastering “4” and subsequent titles will increase.” He explains that past games which aren’t available on Steam will probably be the games which receive such a treatment, but this isn’t an avenue publisher Koei Tecmo has explored yet. Even if the company had set things in motion, Sho doesn’t exactly want to do it.
“But honestly, I don’t want to do it. It would practically be a complete remake, and even this time I sometimes wondered, ‘Why am I remaking something I created myself?’” he laughingly stated. “I’m in my 50s now, and I sometimes think about ‘how many more games I can make before retirement,’ so I want to make new games or sequels.” Adding that he doesn’t want to disappointment fans, he says he has considered letting someone else take on similar projects in the future.
This is a completely understandable position for a developer to have. While fans grow attached to particular entries in their favorite series, no one wants to be stuck reliving the past at nauseam. At some point, your life moves on, and you need to experience new things to either broaden your horizons or simply shake up a routine. Sho wishing to make new games is exactly what I want to hear, especially as someone who has grown tired of nostalgia baiting in entertainment.
