A talented modder has created a VR version of Super Mario 3D World, which players can experience in both third- and first-person.
Creator Destroyjevski has made the project available on GitHub, which users can download for use with OpenXR-compatible headsets (such as Meta Quest, HTC Vive, or Valve Index). The mod is built for Wii U emulator Cemu, meaning an original Wii U copy of the game is required rather than the Nintendo Switch port.
YouTuber JShodanVR captured footage of the mod in action in the video below, which also provides instructions on how to set it up.
Players can choose to see the colorful world through Mario’s first-person perspective, or play in a third-person, diorama-like mode that plays similarly to the 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The project is currently an imperfect alpha build, but is already playable from start to finish in VR.
Super Mario 3D World originally launched on the Nintendo Wii U in 2013. The game saw an enhanced Switch port in 2021, which included a substantial expansion with Bowser’s Fury.
