For many players, RPGs live and die by their stories and characters. For as in-depth as the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has been, some people are simply there for the plot and what happens next versus getting dug into the broader world and experiencing every little side-quest. That’s what makes this new feature in the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation stand out: automatic leveling.

In a recent interview with IGN Japan (translated by Genki), Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that at certain points during the campaign, players will have to option to automatically level up their characters to skip grinding while progressing in the main story. He explained that feedback from some Final Fantasy VII Rebirth players noted they only wanted to experience the main story and weren’t interested in digging into mini-games or side-quests. Since Rebirth was built around players using that extra content to properly level up, I suppose the natural conclusion was to do the leveling up for them and let them get on with playing the story.

Now, this isn’t a mandatory thing if you’re skipping side-content. A prompt asking, “Do you want to automatically raise the level to the recommended level?” will pop up, and you can decline it. It seems like a more natural way of handling difficulty options, though I have to wonder why there aren’t sliders for players to customize how challenging they want the game to be. Last year’s Doom: The Dark Ages did just that, providing pre-determined difficulty options while also letting players tweak aspects to create their own custom difficulty (and go higher than the hardest pre-set). At the same time, some of the Final Fantasy re-releases in recent years have had options just like this, removing most of the friction from those older games.

All told, I’m mostly indifferent to this. I like having options for players that want them, and it’s easy to just ignore it if you don’t like it. I do have to question why this was the natural conclusion, however.
