From out of nowhere yesterday, developer Aspyr released a new port of the 2011 action RPG Lord of the Rings: War in the North across PC and consoles. Available on Switch 1 and 2, the game is available in a new “Legacy Edition” form that includes 60 fps performance (except on Switch 1), local split-screen for two players (again, not on Switch 1), online co-op for three players, auto saves, extra save slots, and revamped enemy AI. It is currently available for $17.99 (10% launch discount) on the eShop, though you’ll need to buy the version specific to your platform.
Made under license from WB Games, Aspyr has teased that more Lord of the Rings games will be coming in the future. “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North™ – Legacy Edition is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr,” the company wrote in a press release. “Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!”
For my money, I would love to see the PlayStation 2 classic Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers get a proper modern port. An incredible movie licensed game during an era where those mostly sucked, it felt like a throwback to beat-em-ups during a generation where the genre had mostly dissipated. Its sequel, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, was even better, though it received a PC port unlike the original. You can still find it on abandonware websites if you want, though again, a proper modern port would be great.
