A talented modder has recreated the 1995 Game Boy game Donkey Kong Land using Donkey Kong Country assets, making the portable title look, sound, and play like its SNES counterpart.
Developer Kasquez released a trailer for the newly released Donkey Kong Land Remake, which features “30+ full sized levels, tight controls and a lot of secrets to uncover.” The game is playable on PC and is available to download for free from Google Drive.
YouTuber Jiggylookback also made a video guide on the game’s configuration process.
Released seven months after Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Land is not just a straightforward port of its SNES sibling. The game features exclusive worlds, enemies, and music, which should make this fanmade remake very appealing to fans of the Country series.
The plot of Donkey Kong Land is a fourth-wall-breaking tale told through the game’s instruction manual, taking place after the events of Donkey Kong Country. Ironically, Cranky Kong admits that the SNES title was more successful than he thought, but only due to its “fancy graphics” and the fact that “kids’ll buy anything nowadays.”
In an attempt to prove to Cranky that their last adventure would be just as successful on an 8-bit system like the Game Boy, Donkey and Diddy allow their banana horde to be stolen by the Kremlings again, kickstarting a new quest.
