You may have seen some rumors that Square Enix was teasing Octopath Traveler III recently courtesy of the wacky game of telephone that is the internet. Sadly, those rumors are way off base, at least according to series producer Tomoya Asano. In a commemorative interview with Dengeki Online, Asano, along with producers Masashi Takahashi and Hirohito Suzuki, told the outlet that Team Asano has nothing to announce in regard to a third mainline entry in the series yet. That doesn’t mean the team isn’t aware that fan expectations are high.
When asked about the eighth anniversary of the series, Asano said, “we’re now looking ahead to the 10th anniversary. I’m well aware that expectations for ‘III’ are the highest, but… I’m a little sorry that I can’t say anything at the moment.” Takahashi then added, “I am, of course, fully aware of the expectations placed upon me.” Team Asano isn’t taking things lightly, it would appear.
Asano elaborated further, “with the scope of HD-2D expanding and the ‘Octopath Traveler’ series growing to a scale of 7 million copies sold, we, as developers, can no longer afford to release something half-baked. If we’re going to do it, we want to go all out.” Suzuki chimed in to say, “If we’re going to make it, we’re going to push it to the absolute limit, you know? (laughs).”
The majority of Dengeki’s interview concerns the recently released Octopath Traveler 0, which serves as a prequel to the series and is an adaptation of a previously mobile-only installment called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
