Square Enix announced this morning that its hit throwback RPGs Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 will soon be receiving Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’s. Packing the same type of upgrades we’ve seen in the past, i.e. resolution bumps and improved performance, the duology is set to hit Nintendo’s new platform on October 1st, 2026. That’s about it for the good news, though.

-no upgrade path
-no save data transfer between Switch 1 & 2 versions— Wario64 (@wario64.bsky.social) July 13, 2026 at 8:56 AM
Individually, each game will cost £49.99 / $59.99, or you can get a double pack for £59.99 / $74.99. Physically, they will be available separately and on game-key cards. That’s already a bit ridiculous for such old games, but it gets worse. Square Enix has confirmed there will be no upgrade path for owners of the previous releases, nor will save data transfer from the Switch 1 versions to the new Switch 2 ports. As the company explains:
“There is also a Nintendo Switch™ version of this game. Please select the version you require carefully. There are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to upgrade the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version. Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch™ and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions.”
The “upgrades” are currently available on the Japanese eShop, so reports of how it performs will likely soon follow. If you haven’t already purchased the games, this might be the best way to play them on Switch 2. It’s going to be a tough sell for anyone not heavily invested in the series, however.
