Along a new trailer today, Square Enix has uploaded a ton of new information regarding Final Fantasy Resonance, the upcoming HD-2D RPG. Posing the question, “What if Final Fantasy had continued to push the limits of pixel art?”, the trailer is mostly a look at the visual design of the game. I don’t think it actually works that well, as the backgrounds are far too clean to evoke old school charm, but that’s neither here nor there. The majority of information today comes from a massive press release, which practically gives away the entire introduction.

Weirdly omitted from the trailer, Square Enix details the worlds players will be traversing, which include Dilmagia and Olderion. Dilmagia, aka the Machinopolis, is reminiscent of Final Fantasy 6’s overall design, and serves as the birthplace of the airship. Longtime Final Fantasy stalwart Cid also used to call the city his home, though has since left to explore the rest of the world.

Olderion, meanwhile, is more of an aquatic city. Known as Aquapolis, it functions as the capital of the Olderion Federation, and is blessed with abundant waters. A coalition known as the Warders of the Waders have maintained peace in the city, helping to protect its citizens alongside the “Maiden of the Water” and an esper called the “God of Water.”

New characters

Next in the press release is a section about new characters players will encounter. They include Lid, an airship engineer from Dirnado who has been helping out her family from a young age. She, along with her brother, have become quite adept engineers, and are on track to rival even Cid in terms of skill. There is also Nichol, a strategist from the Olderion Federation with a passion for defending his homeland. Raised in a family of Wardens, Nichol is tactical and objective, though never loses his composure.

The final new characters Square Enix divulged information on are the majestically titled Veritas of the Heavens and Veritas of the Waters. The duo are both members of the Sworn Six of Palandia, which has given them a ruthless desire to destroy crystals. Heavens utilizes a mixture of lance techniques to dominate opponents, while Waters is more free-form with their combat.

Visions

Moving onto gameplay, Final Fantasy Resonance will feature what Square Enix calls “Visions.” Visions are, essentially, summons of characters from past Final Fantasy games that can aid players in battle. Currently, we know that Tidus (FFX), Squall (FFVIII), Cecil (FFIV), Bartz (FFV), and Zidanne (FFXII) will feature, though more are teased. Some of the Visions will be exclusive characters, such as Aileen who debuted in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (which Resonance seems to be a remake of). Lastly, there are the more traditional summons, including Ifrit, Shiva, and Titan. What would a Final Fantasy game be without them?

Final Fantasy Resonance release date

Final Fantasy Resonance is planned for an October 22nd, 2026, release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. Pre-orders are currently open on all platforms. You can pre-order your copy at Amazon and GameStop today.
