We might still be some months away from Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s release, but it seems like director Naoki Hamaguchi is already thinking about what comes next. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Hamaguchi stressed that while his focus right now is purely on finishing this Remake trilogy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t planning for the future.
“In terms of what I personally want to do, obviously, I think my next creative work is also going to be a JRPG,” he told the outlet. “When you look at all the other titles that we have released at Square Enix, not just the FFVII Remake series, I think Square Enix, as a brand, as a company, is more than capable of delivering this grand-scale RPG that could resonate to gamers across the world.” Naturally, he brings up the possibility of a Final Fantasy VI remake in relation to fan speculation, but immediately squashes that. “Personally, I think that it might be in better hands if it went to another creator in Square Enix,” Hamaguchi says.

Now, this doesn’t rule out the possibility that Hamaguchi will direct another Final Fantasy. He even tells Game Informer that, mentioning that his next project could be attached to the famous series. He also seems excited at the prospect of doing something entirely new, which would probably feel like creative freedom after being stuck with Final Fantasy VII Remake for 12 years now. Only time will tell, because for now, Hamaguchi is working to wrap up this new trilogy.
