Nintendo of Japan has temporarily suspended the sales of its multi-language Switch 2 after the company suspected buyers were hoarding them to later scalp. In a post on Twitter, the company made the announcement by writing, “We temporarily suspended sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 (multilingual support) on the Nintendo Store after confirming several orders that appeared to be hoarding.” It then outlined some stipulations users must meet before purchasing the device, which requires you to log into your Nintendo account to even finalize orders.
For those unaware, Nintendo of Japan offers the Switch 2 in two variants: a Japanese-only console available at general retailers, and a multi-language model available exclusively through its store. The reason this was done was to give Japanese players a cheaper model that wouldn’t be impacted by global tariffs, as well as help curb importers from getting cheaper consoles due to the severely weakened yen. On May 25th, 2026, the price of the Japanese-only Switch 2 increased from ¥49,980 ($310) to ¥59,980 ($375), though the multi-language model stayed the same at ¥69,980 ($435).

So far, nothing seems amiss. The problem that is creeping up, though, is that global prices for the Switch 2 are set to increase by $50 (or region equivalent) on September 1st, 2026. This will make the US model $500 for the base device, which is more than the multi-language Japanese version. It’s likely people are now taking advantage of this to stockpile Switch 2’s that they can later flip when the US prices increase. Once prices increase, Japanese multi-language consoles will be roughly $65 cheaper.
