As is the case with every new Nintendo game release, Tetris 99 will soon be getting a theme based around the recently released Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Released on May 21st, 2026, Yoshi has been bringing his childlike charm to the Nintendo Switch 2 just in time for school to get out for the summer.
As with past Maximus Cup events, players will need to play between the available dates and earn 100 tournament points to permanently unlock the Yoshi theme. It’s fairly easy to do and only requires between 15 minutes — two hours. Just play games, and you’ll get at least one point, though placing higher will net you even more. A win will outright unlock the theme if you’re good enough.
I haven’t personally checked in with Tetris 99 in years now, but I’m stunned that Nintendo has kept updating it since its original launch in 2019. I’m surprised there hasn’t been any Switch 2 updates for it, though I suppose you don’t really need one for Tetris.

Nintendo will be holding a Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99 this next weekend, from May 29th to June 1st.
