As part of its Q4 financial results presentation today, Sega has revealed that it has cancelled the development of what was internally referred to as its “Super Game.” Announced roughly five years ago in partnership with Microsoft, little information was ever given about what the project would be. Potentially, it would have leveraged Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and was set to encompass multiple “triple-A titles” that went “beyond the traditional framework of games.” Alas, it wasn’t longed for this world, but not everything is gloom and doom for the house of Sonic.

Alongside the announcement of this cancellation, Sega reconfirmed that its previously announced revivals of classic IPs are still in development. Revealed at the 2023 Game Awards, so far we’ve only seen Shinobi: Art of Vengeance come out. We’re still waiting for new installments in Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi, though it’s possible Sega is gearing up to properly announce one soon.

What we do know is something within the next year or so is a new Virtua Fighter and a sequel to Alien Isolation. Creative Assembly released a teaser for its Alien sequel a few weeks back, which is a pretty good indicator that progress is coming along nicely. Virtua Fighter is more nebulous, though Sega ported Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. to Switch a few months back. The company is dedicated to getting that just right.
