It wouldn’t be a day of the week without a new rumor surrounding Nintendo. According to a report from Dot Esports, Nintendo is reportedly optioning the rights to a Metroid movie adaptation. In contention for the film are Universal and Sony, the two studios currently handling big-screen Nintendo adaptations (i.e. the Mario animated films and the upcoming live-action Zelda movie).
As the report claims, Nintendo is leaning towards a live-action adaptation for Metroid. Things are far too early to make claims about who will star, but late last year, a user on Twitter claimed that Universal wanted Samus to join its “Mario Cinematic Universe” in some capacity. That would suggest an animated movie, but who can say? I do recall that actress Brie Larson voiced her desire to play Samus nearly a decade ago, so maybe that will finally be a reality?

Interestingly, this wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo has attempted to get a Metroid film off the ground. Years ago, legendary Hong Kong director John Woo was attached to a Metroid project, though it fell through the cracks over creative differences. That lends some credence to these claims, but I believe everything is speculation at this point. Still, with how successful Mario has been and with Zelda looking to continue that success, it would make sense for Nintendo to adapt its other properties to film.
