Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will be launching this week on April 16th, 2026, for Switch. While we’ve already covered its initial announcement and even an FAQ detailing the upgrades Nintendo Switch 2 players can expect, we haven’t gone into much depth about its game design. While a new “Ask the Developer” column from Nintendo will give you the rundown on how its developers approached designing certain mechanics, one thing caught my attention when I saw it online: fart noises.

In part three of today’s column, director Ryutaro Takahashi, programming director Takaomi Ueno, and sound director Toru Minegishi spoke about how the team did “so many retakes” to get farts sounding just right. “Speaking of little quirks,” Takahashi says, “there was a big debate among the team about whether Mii should be able to… break wind.” Laughing a bit, he explains that it’s one of the traits you can bestow upon your Mii if you’re so inclined.

“While we’re on the subject, we really obsessed over getting the sound just right…,” Minegishi added. Ueno then laughingly said, “We did so many retakes.” Minegishi responded by mentioning he got comments from the team about how the sounds were a bit too realistic for their liking, which makes me more excited for Tomodachi Life than I should be as a middle-aged man.

Jumping in for a quick comment, art director Daisuke Kageyama stated, “We tried out all sorts of visual effects, too. For a while, the fart effect looked like an explosion going off.” Can you imagine the memes that would have spawned had Nintendo left that in? I hate that something as juvenile as farting makes me giddy for this game, but then I guess we all need some levity in our lives.
