Konami has released a brand-new trailer for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the upcoming new addition to the series after a 12-year hiatus. Developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, the team behind Dead Cells, the trailer features commentary from Matt Houghton (Evil Empire) and an interpreter speaking on behalf of Tsutomu Taniguchi (Castlevania series producer) that reveals some details about the setting of the game. For starters, things will get very French as the team wanted to set the game in their home country. There will also be historical figures included throughout.
One of the key highlights of the trailer is that players will do battle against a corrupted version of Joan of Arc. It’s not clear how she became corrupted, but I’m assuming you will encounter other French revolutionaries along your journey as you attempt to stop some evil plan involving Dracula. The game is set in 1499 Paris, so we could even have a flashback to the death of Lisa Tepes that kicked off Dracula’s hatred for mankind.
Another shadowy figure, called The Fallen, also bears resemblance to Trevor Belmont, one of the main characters of Castlevani 3: Dracula’s Curse. Belmont’s Curse is something of a direct sequel to that game, taking place 23 years after the events of the NES classic. It’s possible that the game will borrow some ideas from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which had players controlling Alucard and doing battle against a mind controlled Richter Belmont at one point.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse release date
For now, there are too many unknowns about Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. What we can confirm is that it will release in 2026 and will be a side-scrolling adventure game. While Dead Cells was a roguelike, Motion Twin has already confirmed this game will be akin to the Metroidvania game’s of old. It will hit PC and consoles later this year, though there isn’t a native Nintendo Switch 2 version.
