This morning, The Pokémon Company International has announced that the upcoming “Mega Evolution” expansion set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game will be launching on September 26th, 2025, at select retail outlets. The first expansion for the Mega Evolution series, these new cards will see the return of Mega Evolved forms of Pokémon to TCG. As the official website notes, the last set to include Mega Evolutions was Sun and Moon.
The press release goes over details that are a little beyond me, but it does mention some changes to how Mega Evolutions will work now. For instance, the new Mega Evolution cards will appear as either Basic, Stage 1, or Stage 2 Pokémon and players can jump evolutions to get to their final forms (the example it gives is that Mega Lucario ex evolves from Riolu instead of Lucario). The cards will also feature a new art style for Mega Evolution ex Pokémon to better differentiate them. These Mega Evolution cards will be available in booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, and as part of various different collections from select retailers.
If you’d like to sample the cards before launch, a number of prerelease tournaments will be held in conjunction with the Play! Pokémon program. The official website doesn’t currently have any date and locations listed, but certain retailers should be holding events starting September 13th, 2025. If you’re into the digital version of Pokémon TCG, then you can actually sample the Mega Evolution expansion starting September 11th, 2025.
