Over the course of the past couple years or so, the Super Mario Bros. series has seen quite a bit of change. When Charles Martinet stepped down from his role as the voice of Mario, that took many fans by surprise. That wouldn’t be the last of the well-known Mario cast changing however, as fans noticed that as of Mario Kart World, Princess Peach and Toad have received new voices as well.

This role shift was confirmed as of this morning by the former voice actress for the two, Samantha Kelly. She has been the voice of Princess Peach and Toad for almost 20 years now, starting back in 2007 with Mario Strikers Charged and Mario Party 8. This shift has come as quite a surprise to many, with Kelly putting out a heartfelt statement on Instagram after receiving the news.

“Thank you for so many years of friendship and joy. I’m sad that it’s over, I truly would have wanted to voice Peach and Toad forever. Nintendo let me know yesterday that they decided to recast these roles. I’m grateful that I got to do these voices for so many years. Peach and Toad are such strong and beautiful characters that I pray they live forever no matter who voices them. So much love.”

While it’s always a bit sad to see the voice roles of beloved characters such as these change hands, it gives a moment to appreciate the work of the former voice actor. Samantha Kelly’s role as Princess Peach and Toad over the years has been nothing short of amazing, and even with this shift it will be impossible to forget the mark that she has left on the greater Super Mario franchise.
