While Nintendo and EA haven’t always had the rosiest of relationships, that hasn’t stopped the two from working together at various points throughout different console generations. EA doesn’t have a lot of games on the current Switch, but EA CEO Andrew Wilson believes that the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 could provide some “real energy” for EA’s top franchises, including Madden and EA Sports FC.
In an earning call yesterday, investors asked Wilson how EA envisions supporting the Switch 2 and he stated that he feels the console could be a boon for the company. “Anytime a new console comes into the marketplace, that’s a benefit to us,” Wilson claimed. “It gives us the ability to access and acquire new players.” He also stated that franchises typically perform well on Nintendo platforms, though he didn’t list any specifically.
Going further, he said, “Certainly, our expectation is that products like FC and Madden and others might find real energy on the platform as they have done in the last. When you think about something like The Sims and the My Sims Cozy Bundle, which performed well ahead of our expectations… that represents a great opportunity for us.”
Before you jump to the conclusion that Madden 26 will be launching on Switch 2 this year, Wilson did dump water on the fire. “There is nothing in our models at this juncture,” he said. He reiterated how when a new console enters the market, it allows publishers to reach new audiences that were previously unavailable. I don’t know how that holds up when EA still hasn’t released a Madden game on Switch, but we’ll see if Wilson follows through when the Switch 2 hits the market.
