26 years ago today the Game Boy Color released in Japan. The Big N’s handheld might be little, but it packs a punch in the market of gaming when you look at the combined sales of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. With 118.69 million units sold worldwide between the two, the mini machine is the fourth best-selling system of all-time. 26 years have passed since the Game Boy Color’s release in 1998 and a lot may have happened in that span of time in terms of hardware, but the fact that it’s remained so prominent in the charts among other heavy-hitters speaks volumes.
Personally speaking, the GBC was a huge part my life as a teenager, and I have so many memories tied to games. Off the top of my head, favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, Wario Land II, Lufia, Wario Land III, and countless others come to mind. To this day I still boot up my original system, and I even use a new (old) one that my husband bought me a few years ago so I can play carts that I’ve picked up over the years at gaming conventions I’ve browsed. It’s fun both returning to beloved titles and also playing new games I never got the chance to experience when I was younger. If you’ve never done that yourself, it’s something I recommend taking the time to do now. You won’t regret it.
Let’s celebrate the Game Boy Color
Something we like doing here at Nintendo Wire is sharing projects we’ve created in the past to celebrate special occasions. For this 26th anniversary I’d like to commemorate the Game Boy Color by presenting a number of de-makes our incredibly talented editor and content creator Tom Brown made over the last six years.
Please enjoy these de-makes — and let’s get together and celebrate this truly magnificent system!
