Back in the ’90s, Nintendo, Sega, and Sony were locked in what is now commonly referred to as “The Console Wars”—a fierce rivalry between gaming giants that played out through advertisements, lawsuits, and even, in one instance, a public feud in front of Congress over video game violence. While Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft generally get along today, back then, advertisements were packed with jabs and shock value, often at the expense of the competition.

While Nintendo was generally more restrained compared to Sega’s aggressive “Genesis Does” campaign, they occasionally released some hilarious ads that took jabs at the competition. But none were more iconic than the Star Fox 64 Nintendo Power VHS, where goons from Sony and Sega break into Nintendo headquarters and torture a Mario toy using a vice. It’s so absurd you have to see it to believe it. Lucky for us, the entire VHS was preserved online for us all to enjoy!

The ’90s were truly a wild time. Nowadays, Nintendo prefers to focus on its legacy rather than the “Console Wars.” In fact, Nintendo recently sat down with Famitsu to discuss this very topic in relation to the upcoming Nintendo Museum. Check out their thoughts below!
