There are three things that are certain in this life: Death, Taxes, and Nintendo Switch system updates. Following on from the rather iterative update Nintendo rolled out in December, Switch system update 18.0.0 is now live and it brings with it a whole host of features. If you’ve ever wanted to watch the “Switch Parental Controls” video in Korean, your time has come!

One option that does sound rather useful is a new auto-sleep setting. When playing in docked mode, you can now set the console to 15 minutes for its auto-sleep function. That might feel a bit too brief, but sometimes you get distracted by a phone call or a coughing fit, etc., so it will help prevent your system from being on for an hour before it goes into rest.

It’s the last option that is incredible, however. If you can believe it, Nintendo has implemented some “general system stability improvements” this time. Talk about spoiling your fans. Here is the full list of new features:

  • Added “15 Minutes” as an option for “Auto-sleep when playing on TV” in Sleep Mode Settings
  • Added Korean as a supported language for “Nintendo Switch Parental Controls” introductory video
    • When the console language is set to Korean, the video can be accessed from Settings > Parental Controls
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience

Is there anything else in the Switch 18.0.0 update?

If those magnificent new features weren’t enough for you, then you should check out dataminer OatmealDome’s latest discoveries with this update. According to their digging, the bad words list has been updated. While the details are a little vague, you can no longer input variants of “penis” as a word. “Penls” has also been blocked (which is the word with a lowercase L) and there are some censor dodging Japanese death threats that are no longer possible.

As for the Switch SDK, it seems that all system components have been updated with this latest version. This doesn’t signal Switch 2 launching soon, however, as it’s just a normal procedure that happens with every major new version. It’s happened with 17.0.0, 16.0.0, etc.
