In an idea that sounds like on-the-nose satire, Sega announced and launched an official Sonic the Hedgehog fan Discord server last night with the hope of creating a place for fans of the blue blur to chill out. As you would expect, that last all of four minutes before things went haywire and Sega had to start locking down specific channels and general server access.

Things started last night when Sega posted to Twitter writing, “Looking for a place to chill and chat all things Sonic the Hedgehog? Maybe find people to race in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? We are excited to welcome you to the official Sonic Discord server! Join now.” Within minutes, users started posting all kinds of NSFW content, including pornographic material, racist comments, and general spam.

A few hours after launching the server, moderators locked out chat permissions and incorporated restrictions in an effort to prevent spam. Currently, eight of the nine chat channels are locked, and the general chat channel has “Slow Mode” enabled to prevent users from infinitely spamming nonsense. The only channel freely open is one for posting clips of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, though it seems users are taking to that channel to ask why they can’t post anywhere else.

Sega is allowing users who pay to boost the server access to post in all channels, though as VGC writes, users who earned enough XP when the server was freely open have seemingly gained the ability to post wherever they like. An FAQ on the server’s news page states that message deletion and user bans are down to “aggressive” auto-moderation tools, which is causing otherwise legitimate users to be banned.
