007 First Light launched on PC and consoles this May to solid reviews and great sales, but the promised Nintendo Switch 2 port has been MIA. While developer IO Interactive has promised it will release the game on Nintendo’s latest platform, the company wound up delaying it a third time last week and pushed it into 2027. In a new interview with Inven Global, IO technical producer Cristina Vega explained that the game is still coming along, but the decision was made so that fans could “experience the game in its most polished form.”
As Vega says, “While being delayed for a third time is certainly disappointing news for fans, this decision was also made for their benefit. The development team had been pushing hard for a long time and needed a brief breather, and combined with requests from marketing and various other factors, we had no choice but to postpone the release date to March 2027 once again. Ultimately, we decided on another delay because we want fans to experience the game in its most polished form on Switch 2, so we ask for your understanding.”
It seems that a big point of contention has been performance, with IO deciding on capping First Light to 30 fps on Nintendo’s hybrid console. “Unfortunately, the Switch 2 version is targeting a stable 30fps,” Vega stated. “For now, hitting that is our highest priority.” She mentions how IO toyed around with getting 60 fps, and even tried making cutscenes run at a different framerate from general gameplay, but things didn’t work properly. That’s understandable given the power differential the Switch 2 has from dedicated console hardware, and I’d welcome a stable 30 fps over a wobbly “60.”
There’s further discussion of the technical decisions made for 007 Fight Light’s belated port. They go a little over my head, but talk about introducing a new rendering technique to allow for denser crowds in packed scenes is particularly interesting. All said, it seems IO is doing its best to ensure Switch 2 players aren’t receiving a heavily compromised version of the game, even if some concession will have to be made.
