Surprising absolutely no one, Nintendo revealed that an updated port of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be hitting Switch 2 next year. Planned for release on February 25th, 2027, the so-called “Definitive Edition” will not only fix the performance woes of this Warriors spinoff, but will include higher enemy counts, a new “Calamity” difficulty mode, and all the previous DLC from the Switch 1 version.
Where things get a little sketchy is with the description of this upgrade. Not titled “Switch 2 Edition,” the trailer seems to imply that players will need to outright buy the game a second time to get these new upgrades. There will be a discount for owners of the original Switch version, but the description makes it sound like you will get access to a digital version of the Switch 2 port rather than an upgrade that requires the old cartridge. I suppose that’s better than having to pay full price again, but it certainly is confusing considering Nintendo’s past upgrades.
Either way, this is a much-needed upgrade to a rather solid Warriors game that was seriously hampered by the original Switch console. I remember playing split-screen with my friend and seeing frame rates lower than 15 fps, so it will be transformative to not play this game as a slideshow.
