After many had speculated it would happen, Polish developer CD Projekt Red announced at Gamescom 2026 that The Witcher 3 would be getting a Nintendo Switch 2 port in the form of The Witcher 3 Remastered. A full on overhaul of the game’s combat and missions, the remaster will be available to free for owners of The Witcher 3 on all platforms, including the original Switch. That’s a big difference from most publishers, including Nintendo, who would rather charge owners a small fee or demand they repurchase the game entirely.
Speaking with The Game Business, CDPR CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that the thought of charging for this new version never crossed anyone’s mind at the company. To him, the release of the “Songs of the Past” expansion in 2027 is what will fulfill the company’s commercial goals for the year, so this remaster is being viewed as a gift to fans. “It was never a question we asked ourselves,” he said.
“We were going deeper into the development of Songs of the Past with [developer] Fool’s Theory, and we started chatting: ‘Why don’t we make the game more modern? Everything felt like it was developed 10 years ago,’” Nowakowski explains. “We started chatting about what we could do to improve it. It started with small things, and then it turned into this larger project, and we suddenly realized we had a remaster on our hands.”
The Witcher 3 Remastered will be releasing on September 29th, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Current owners on any platform, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch, will be able to upgrade for free when it hits digital stores.
