As most people are likely aware of by now, Grand Theft Auto VI is releasing in November. To get away from competing directly with Rockstar’s long-anticipated sequel, most publishers have shifted the release dates of upcoming games to September and October 2026. Capcom is among those publishers, positioning Onimusha: Way of the Sword for September 25th, 2026, which puts it within spitting distance from GTA. Despite some rumoring saying it would release soon (which is false), Capcom had reconfirmed that the game is releasing in late September.

Speaking to Eurogamer recently, Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki said, “We’ve already said we’re releasing it, we can’t back out now!” Laughing while saying that, he isn’t really concerned about the avalanche of games coming out this fall. Capcom was surprised by just how many games are hitting store shelves this fall, but Kadowaki feels the unique setting, gameplay, and style of Way of the Sword will set it apart.

Discussing his feelings with VGC, Kadowaki said, “We think our lead character, Musashi, is a key selling point, alongside the satisfaction of the combat itself. The Issen mechanic, the parries, and all of those things come together to make a really unique, fresh experience, so we’re not worried.” Unsurprisingly, Kadowaki is more concerned about upholding the legacy of the series than he is about other games releasing at the same time.
