Not shocking in the slightest, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has just passed $1 billion in global gross at the box office. 10 weeks after its release on April 1, 2026, the film has now become the first movie in 2026 to hit the milestone. This year hasn’t been filled with mega-hits, even if films like Michael and Project Hail Mary have pulled in more than $650 million each, but it’s still nice to see that the Mario Brothers command so much presence in the pop culture space.
Along with crossing the $1 billion threshold, the Galaxy Movie’s success brings the Super Mario film franchise into the top 10 highest grossing animated series’ ever. Surprisingly not comprised of only Disney films, Mario now rests at number nine with a combined total of $2.3 billion. That’s very impressive for only having two films, especially since it tops Madagascar, which had seven, and is within throwing distance from Kung Fu Panda, which has four. You can see the list below:
- Despicable Me, $5.64B, 6 films
- Shrek, $3,98B. 6 films
- Toy Story, $3.28B, 5 films
- Ice Age, $3.22B, 5 films
- Zootopia, $2.89B, 2 films
- Frozen, $2.73B, 2 films
- Inside Out, $2.56B, 2 films
- Kung Fu Panda, $2.37B, 4 films
- Super Mario films, $2.30B, 2 films
- Madagascar, $2.26B, 7 films
There are a bunch of other records The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has broken, but they relate to a very niche selection of accolades. Things like “second-highest grossing video game adaptation,” and such. We could list them for days on end, but it’s safe to say that Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination won’t be stopping the Mario films anytime soon.
