As part of this morning’s brief Dragon Quest update stream, Square Enix announced that it has rebooted the development of Dragon Quest XII. Previously announced five years ago as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, it seems development wasn’t going so smoothly with the game. Now, the game has been rebranded as Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams and will be releasing… at some point in the future?

It’s certainly a weird way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the series, but I suppose news that a 12th installment is still coming is better than news that the series is dead and buried. Fans were at least treated to a new render and concept art piece of the main protagonist, who seemingly looks like he’s depressed about existence. The only other detail we got was that the storyline of this new iteration for Dragon Quest XII will be entirely different from what was previously announced in 2021.

What consoles will Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams release on?

Nintendo Switch 2 is likely a given due to the popularity of the console in Japan, where Dragon Quest still commands a large fan base.
