Sony has released a teaser for its upcoming Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger of Barbarian and Weapons fame.
The trailer follows medical courier and main character Bryan (played by Austin Abrams) as he stumbles across a vacant house in a snowy setting. As he uses a phone to contact his romantic partner, a montage of Bryan’s horrific encounters with the undead plays.
Among these scenes, Bryan runs into an obese, hairless man that many viewers have playfully likened to Dune character Baron Harkonnen. There is lots of disturbing imagery in the teaser, with humanoid limbs thrusting out of the edges of an open doorway and bodies falling from rooftops and exploding on impact.
Zombies aside, there are no sightings of signature creatures from the Resident Evil games, such as Hunters or Lickers. Many viewers have said, however, that the chittering sounds that play at the end sound very similar to the Novistadors from the Resident Evil 4 remake – the giant, acid-spewing insects that Leon fights underground.
Resident Evil will be released in theatres on September 18th. It’s a reboot of the film series co-written by Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten, starring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.
