Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV, its long-running second MMO in the Final Fantasy series, will be heading to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026. Revealed as part of director Naoki Yoshida’s keynote speech for the Final Fantasy Fan Festival in Anaheim, California, the game will have an initial free month of early access to ensure server stability before service officially begins. It’s unclear if that is happening in August, or July.
Similar to how the game operates on other platforms, it will require not only a purchase of the game client, but monthly payments for server access. If you’re already a subscriber to Final Fantasy XIV on another platform, you can access your character on Switch 2 when the game is available. You will need to rebuy the game and buy a separate subscription, however, but any existing subscriptions can get a 50% discount for time on Switch 2.

It’s certainly exciting to think that a fully-fledged MMO is about to hit Nintendo’s portable console. I know there were a few on the original Switch, but there’s something special about the idea of Final Fantasy XIV being available on the go.
