Nestled in yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play stream was a rather bold new announcement from Crystal Dynamics: a new Legacy of Kain game is finally being made after 23 years. Titled Legacy of Kain: Ascendence, this new entry is a prequel that winds the clock back to before series mainstays Kain and Raziel were godlike in power. It’s also a 2D side-scroller more akin to Castlevania than either Blood Omen or Soul Reaver.
When does Legacy of Kain: Ascendance release?
Releasing on March 31st, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, it will take players on a journey through the underworld while swapping between four different characters (technically three). You’ll control Kain, Vampire Raziel, Human Raziel, and Elaleth. That last one is a character only seen in graphic novels, so their inclusion in an official game makes them canon to the overall series lore. If that wasn’t enough, the original voice actors for Kain, Raziel, Ariel, and Moebius will be reprising their roles, really solidifying this as a return-to-form.
More Legacy of Kain
Surprisingly, Ascendence won’t be the only Legacy of Kain game coming out next month. A remaster of the PlayStation 2 installment Legacy of Kain: Defiance is scheduled for March 3rd, 2026, on all major platforms. While that stands as the end of the series so far, the success of both of these games might signal a whole new beginning for this overlooked and unappreciated series.
