In the new nine-month financial report for 2025 from Nintendo, the company has announced that the Switch 1 has moved 155.37 million sales since being released in 2017. That’s an astonishing number, putting it within spitting distance of the PlayStation 2 and making it Nintendo’s best-selling console ever. Coming off the back of the relative failure that was the Wii U, Nintendo needed a big win and it has now acquired the biggest win of all.
In a report by CNBC, CEO of Kantan Games Serkan Koto said, “The company was in shambles after the previous console flopped hard, so the Switch marks a major turnaround in Nintendo’s long history. It could have not come at a better time.” While the timing was certainly a key factor, I think the real magic is that Nintendo tapped into a market people didn’t even realize they wanted: full consoles on the go. The Nintendo Switch couldn’t deliver PlayStation 4-quality visuals, but it gave you an HD experience on the go with very little compromise that could then be seamlessly switched to the TV whenever you wanted. Genius.

Enough has been written about the original Switch to last a lifetime. The concept was so good that Nintendo didn’t even tweak it much for the Switch 2. While I wouldn’t expect the console to move many more units in the coming years, Nintendo doesn’t have anything to fear when it comes remaining relevant.
