Despite people clamoring for more multimedia options on the Switch, Nintendo has announced that the Hulu app for its hybrid console will be discontinued on February 5th, 2026. Launched all the way back in November 2017, the app was a decent enough way to watch TV shows and movies if you had Nintendo’s platform. The major issue with it was that quality was limited to strictly HD, which only really became a problem once 4K TVs started to take a foot hold in the market. It was also weirdly cumbersome to navigate.
Personally, I don’t think this is a problem, as pretty much every device you would buy nowadays has smart functionality. At my desk right now, I can stream Hulu to my PC, my phone, my PlayStation 5, and my TV’s own built-in apps. I’m almost certain that is why Nintendo never pushed for media apps on the Switch, as it became redundant in a world where your fridge can stream movies. It also frees up resources on the console to better play games.
I don’t think the decision to discontinue Hulu was Nintendo’s, however. As we’re all aware of, the Walt Disney Corporation owns major parts of the film industry, and one of its properties is Hulu. With Disney looking to slim down its offerings to solely Disney+, standalone Hulu apps for other devices are going kaput in the near future. Disney likely looked at user statistics for the Switch app and decided to shut it off early due to a lack of interest.
At any rate, if you were using Hulu on Nintendo Switch, you’ll only have a few more weeks before the app goes bye bye.
