Square Enix has announced that a free playable demo for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the remake of fan-favorite installment Dragon Quest VII, will be available for download tomorrow, January 7th, 2026. Downloadable on PC and consoles with demos available for both Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, progress made in the demo will carry over to the final game when it
A brief trailer for the announcement doesn’t really give us an idea of what the demo covers, but if it’s anything like the Octopath Traveler demos, it might actually contain a few hours of early content. Along with save transfer, anyone who plays the demo will unlock a “Day Off Dress” for Maribel that can be used in the final game. That’s at least some incentive to boot it up.
What will be interesting to see are the changes made from the previous 3DS remake that released all the way back in 2016 (2013 in Japan). Square Enix has noted that Reimagined is more than a standard remake, fundamentally changing how progression and combat work, so I’m betting this will be more like experiencing a new game rather than an old favorite.
