Almost like clockwork, the leaks from tonight’s Game Awards event are starting to leak out in full force. While many were expecting some form of Tomb Raider announcement, it seems the next game in Eidos Montreal’s reboot Tomb Raider timeline will be a remake of the original game. Titled “Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis,” a roughly 30-second trailer showcases not only some of the original puzzles from the opening area, but the iconic T-rex boss fight that Lara encounters.

What’s interesting about the visual style here is that it seems to be veering away from the darker, more realistic tone that the past Tomb Raider trilogy had. While I do expect there to be more “mature” writing (whatever that means), Lara is finally wearing her iconic outfit and wielding dual pistols. She technically did that in 2013’s Tomb Raider, but this is more overt than those last three games.

I’m more interested in figuring out why another Tomb Raider remake is happening. 18 years old, Tomb Raider Anniversary hit PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox 360, and Wii and was a pretty faithful recreation of the original game in a modern style. Unless this new version is radically changing bits, I don’t know why we need yet another remake of this classic game. The recently released remasters updates the originally brilliantly, so this seems almost redundant.
