Buried roughly halfway through its latest financial results report, Nintendo has confirmed that it will continue to develop films following the release of the live-action Legend of Zelda movie in 2027. On the 33rd page of the report, there is a quote which reads, “Currently, we are actively taking part in financing and are deeply involved in the production of multiple movies, from planning and development through to production.” This is likely in conjunction with the recently rebranded Nintendo Pictures, which recently released an animated Pikmin short.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furakawa also told shareholders that the company is “building a framework for a consistent release cadence” beyond the projects already announced. While we might not be getting a Nintendo film every year, the company would like to have more regular releases in theaters that then point back to its video game division. “We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future,” he said.

What those films will be is anyone’s guess, though it’s clear that the Super Mario brand is strong enough to carry a box-office past the $1 billion mark. There is no doubt that the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be another smash-hit, though the detour into live-action will be a stark change for the Zelda film. Nintendo would do wise to mix up its releases between brand, however, before oversaturation ruins anything.
