In a new interview with Traxion, Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka explained why Sega made the decision to delay the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. While I’m pretty sure most people would have assumed this was the case, Iizuka said, “We wanted to release the Switch 2 version at the same time [as other platforms]. But because the console’s release date was later, we wanted to make sure we could provide a game that optimised the new console.” Well, that was simple.
Elaborating a little further, Iizuka explained, “When you look at the content that will be provided, there’s no difference between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 games. It won’t be a 100% replica because of the differences in the hardware specs.” He then states that this belated release will be making full use of the Switch 2’s capabilities and will boast both “enhanced visuals and performance” over its Switch 1 iteration. He did not give specifics, so it’s unclear whether the game will run in 4K resolution or not.
He did explain, “For all consoles, we want to make sure we can provide the best resolution and frame rate based on the specs of the console. In regards to resolution and frame rate, it won’t be the same across all platforms.” That also somehow works into crossplay, which CrossWorlds features on all platforms. “When you play cross-play, it’s important for people to get the same level of experience, no matter what console they are using,” Iizuka said.
It’s at least comforting to hear that Sega is taking its time to ensure that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds doesn’t wind up as a rushed port for Nintendo’s newest console. The Switch version isn’t bad, but it definitely shows the limitations of the now eight-year-old hardware. When the game finally makes the jump to Switch 2, it should be a revelation for players.
