In the same week that we reported on a Redditor mashing an N64 controller together with a Game Boy Micro, it’s our pleasure to present you with a fully functional version of Lego’s Game Boy replica model. Thanks to the efforts of Natalie the Nerd, the rather cute and amusing Lego prop can finally pretend it was an official Game Boy the entire time.
As reported by The Verge, Natalie took actual Game Boy hardware and modified it to fit within the confines of the Lego Game Boy’s dimensions. Since her background includes circuit board design, this project was seemingly right up her alley. She also ordered what she described as “the smallest screen kit on the market” to give the prop a display. Some of the bricks from the Lego model needed to be removed, but otherwise everything fits within what Lego provided.

The concoction isn’t 100% complete yet as the A and B buttons are rigged together with a rubberband. Natalie plans to 3D print Lego-like buttons to replace them so that she can play games as if it were an original Game Boy. If you’re wondering about power, the mod utilizes USB-C, so you don’t even need batteries.
If this sounds like something you’d like to try for yourself, Natalie plans to sell some aftermarket components and share her plans once finished. I’m not sure if purists will be happy with dismantling original hardware to make that happen, but having a functional Lego Game Boy is damn awesome.
