With roughly a month left before the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Nintendo has announced that Mega Malamar will be the latest in the line of Mega Evolutions contained within this newest Pokémon spinoff. With a rather lengthy explanation on the official Pokémon website, my mind still immediately went to Mallomar cookies. I suppose this critter is some form of psychic Pokémon that can hypnotize its targets, but I prefer to imagine it as a gigantic cookie that oozes chocolate and marshmallow when you hug it. Maybe I’m just really hungry.
A short video for the Mega Evolution was posted on Nintendo’s YouTube channel and it doesn’t really clear up anything for me. As the website description reads, “Malamar’s brain has become enlarged as a result of Mega Evolution. Greatly enhanced psychic power overflows from its body, emitting a bright glow. This vividly colored light further amplifies the Pokémon’s hypnotic abilities, allowing it to freely overwrite the personalities or even memories of others — a terrifying power that can make someone seem like an entirely different person.” Um… yup.
I’m probably too out of the loop on Pokémon news to get it, but Mega Malamar will be available when Pokémon Legends: Z-A launches on October 16, 2025. The game will be available for both the Switch 1 and 2, though the Switch 2 version will be $10 more.
