The modding community around Super Smash Bros. never ceases to amaze me, but it seems to be a sticking point for Nintendo. If you remember from some years back, Nintendo once sent a cease and desist letter to The Big House, an organization centered around game tournaments. Due to COVID lockdowns, The Big House had organized an online Smash Bros. Melee tournament for fans to participate in which was promptly shut down by Nintendo because… well, no one is really sure other than Nintendo loves to be litigious.

As a bit of a goof, modder Mooshies recently created a mod for Melee that includes the infamous C&D letter. While not directly linked to The Big House, it pokes fun at the situation and even echoes other C&Ds Nintendo has sent out over the years. As their tweet reads, “See how much court fines you can stack up against your opponents with this new skin over [COPYRIGHTED CHARACTER]!”

It doesn’t seem like the mod is currently available to the public, but I appreciate the figurative middle finger. For as creative and innovative as Nintendo can be, it often seems at odds with the modern world and how the internet has changed the medium.
