Tetris 99 is the one Nintendo game that simply will not die. Despite originally launching back in 2019 as a free download for Switch Online subscribers, Nintendo has continually updated the game over the years with new themes focused on its latest Switch games. You’d think after more than half a decade, Nintendo would have moved on from its premiere battle royale title, but that’s not the case. For Tetris 99’s 48th Maximus Cup, players will be able to unlock a theme based on Donkey Kong Bananza, the recently released Nintendo Switch 2 platformer that has been receiving glowing praise.

As with previous Maximus Cups, the event will run for one weekend with the goal being to earn 100 points across Tetris 99 matches. For the Donkey Kong theme, players will need to log on between August 1st, 2025, and August 4th, 2025, and play to their heart’s content to earn enough points. Each match is guaranteed one point, though placing higher in the final rankings will earn you more, and winning a match will outright unlock the theme.

I haven’t personally booted Tetris 99 for a few years now, but I still find it to be an incredible game. It’s one of the titles that helped change my perception about battle royale games, though I’m still not a fan of things like Fortnite or Apex Legends. I do think it’s funny that Switch 1 players can unlock a theme for a Switch 2 game, but maybe Nintendo is working on a new port of Tetris 99 for its latest console. We can only dream, I suppose.
