People often say that Nintendo’s products fly off the shelves faster than they can be stocked, but I didn’t think that was a literal statement. A post on the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page stated that they had arrested 45-year-old Jamal Reed-Obafumi of Oakland, California on June 17th, 2025, for stealing over $10,000 worth of Switch games from local libraries. The thefts allegedly took place between April and June of this year, with Reed-Obafumi linked to at least seven different incidents.

While the specific number of titles stolen isn’t mentioned, police claimed that Reed-Obafumi had been visiting library branches in Northern California to commit the thefts. He is now facing 12 counts of felony charges, including “multiple counts of burglary and committing a felony while out on bail.” As GameSpot points out, you can find a list of available Switch games in the Marin County libraries on its website, which features over 200 games for patrons to sign out.

It’s hard to imagine why anyone would want to steal from a local library, but then stranger things have happened. As the Marin County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook, “Our libraries are pillars of the community and must be safeguarded for everyone to enjoy!” I agree, and hope that the branches affected are now able to better serve their local communities.
